Grandparents give the presents that get remembered. They also, quite often, live three flights away and see their grandchildren twice a year on a screen.
A story with Granny in it — by name, in the pictures, part of the adventure — does something a video call cannot. It puts you in the room at bedtime, on an ordinary Tuesday, for years.
Distance can be the story
Tell us that Grandpa lives in Australia and the book will be about that: the distance, the time difference, the going and the coming back. Children find that far more reassuring than being told not to be sad.
The dedication is the part they keep
Every printed book has a dedication page. It is a page for your own words, in your own voice, printed inside a book with their name on the cover — which is a different object entirely from a card.
