Leo bundled in winter clothes by a farmhouse door with Nell the sheepdog, snow falling outside
Three jumpers. Two socks on each foot. One bright red hat. “Ready,” said Leo. Nell the sheepdog wagged her whole back end. Outside, the snow came down in great soft feathers and the farm went quiet. Which is exactly why Leo heard it. Tap. Tap-tap.
The robin on a snowy doorstep, Leo crouching down to it with a lantern
He opened the door a crack and lifted the lantern. There on the step — small and round and shivering — sat a robin. Tap-tap, it said again, and looked right up at him. “You’ve nowhere to go, have you,” said Leo.
Leo’s red woollen hat in the fork of a snowy tree with the robin settling into it, Leo watching
So Leo climbed the old apple tree, careful as anything, and wedged his red hat into the fork of two branches. It made a very good nest indeed. The robin hopped in, fluffed up, and stopped shivering. Leo’s ears were absolutely freezing. He didn’t mind one bit.

What made this book Leo’s

Everything on this list came from what a parent told us, and every one of them changed the story rather than decorating it.

  • Leo’s name and his grandparents’ farm in Donegal
  • Nell, the sheepdog who comes everywhere
  • His new red hat, which does not stay his for long
  • Christmas Eve, snow, and one small act of giving
