Personalised children’s books have existed for forty years, and most of them work the same way: a story is written once, a name is dropped in, and the same dragon meets the same ending in a hundred thousand houses.
We started TaleForMe because that is not what a child recognises. What they recognise is the dog. The wellingtons they will not take off. The grandmother in Australia. The fact that they are frightened of the dark and everyone has been very kind about it and it has not helped.
So we write the story afterwards. You tell us about your child, and a book is written and illustrated for that child alone — which is only possible at this price because a computer does the writing and the drawing, to a brief we wrote and to the details you give us. We say that plainly because it is your child’s book and you should know how it was made.
What that buys is a book that can be about the thing that matters this month, made tonight, for less than a decent hardback. What it costs is that the first draft is not always right — which is why every page can be rewritten and every illustration redrawn, and why you read the opening before you pay for anything.
What we will not do
Reproduce a real child’s face.
A photo, if you upload one, becomes an original illustrated character carrying their colouring and general look. It is a drawing in the style you chose, not a copy of a photograph.
Keep a photograph.
Ever, beyond the minutes it takes to draw that character. It is the most sensitive thing this product touches and the shortest-lived data we hold.
Sell or share anything about your child.
Not the story, not the details, not to advertisers, not to anyone. There is no version of this business that involves that.
Put another company’s characters in a book.
They belong to somebody else, and a book containing them would be an infringing object rather than a keepsake.
Use a book you made to train anything.
Your child’s story is your child’s story.
